Routes

Below is a selection of routes available in and around the bala area. We also have a number of other scenic routes available, starting and finishing at Gro Cycles.

Route 1 (21 miles)

One route that we at Gro Cycles believe incorporates all of these features, is as follows:-

(Gro Cycles to Llandderfel to Bala, along shoreline of Bala Lake/Llyn Tegid to Llanuwchllyn along A494 to Bala and return to Gro Cycles)

1. Gro Cycles to A494 and take care in turning RIGHT onto A494 and travel 0.4 miles to Cefnddwysarn and at crossroads turn LEFT to Llandderfel (signposted) and travel along this country road for 1.3 miles to Llandderfel. At the end of the road turn RIGHT and travel through village (shop in centre) for 0.5 miles, until reaching war memorial.

2. Turn LEFT at war memorial onto B4401 and pass over bridge over the River Dee for some 0.2 miles and just before Bryntirion Inn (snacks and bar meals available) turn RIGHT onto B4402 (signposted and Pale Hall) and continue for 1 mile until you reach the junction of the B4391.

3. Turn RIGHT at junction of B4391 (signposted Bala) and continue for some 3.2 miles. At junction of B4403 turn LEFT (Bala Lake Railway station signposted) and continue along the beautiful shoreline of Bala Lake/Llyn Tegid (many picnic stops available) for 5 miles into the village of Llanuwchllyn with the Bala Lake Railway Station signposted on your right-hand side (why not take a ride on this narrow-guage railway line and enjoy the picturesque scenery around Bala Lake/Llyn Tegid? – brochure available).

4. Continue along the B4403 for 0.5 miles through the village of Llanuwchllyn (The Eagles Inn on your right-hand side for snacks, bar meals and drinks) until you reach the junction of the A494. Take care in turning RIGHT onto the A494 and travel towards Bala for some 5.2 miles (take time to explore the traditional Welsh market town of Bala, with it’s shops, cafes and pubs – with tourist information centre by the lakeside as you enter Bala, next to the leisure centre on your right-hand side).

5. Continue out of Bala, along the A494 towards the A5 for some 2.9 miles until you reach the village of Cefnddwysarn. Continue along the A494 for another 0.4 miles and the turn LEFT into Gro Cycles site.

1. Lake Vyrnwy - (a 12 mile shoreline, long and flat circular route around the picturesque Mid Wales reservoir – see “links” page for details) – see www.rspb.vyrnwy.org

2. Mountain Bike Routes, such as Coed y Brenin and Berwyn Mountains (see www.mtbroutes.com , www.mtbwales.co.uk , www.ridetheclwyds.com and www.forestry.gov.uk/wales on the links page
3. Llyn Brenig in the Denbigh Moors (a 10 mile route around the lake on tracks and a short distance on a road).

4. Lon Dysynni Cycle Route – explore the sights and scenery of the Dysynni Valley in the south of Gwynedd (Tywyn).

5. Mawddach Trail – winding lazily along a disused railway rack, the Mawddach Trail follows the Mawddach estuary for 9 miles from Barmouth/Abermaw to Dolgellau (part of Lon Las Cymru, route 8 on National Cycle Network – see www.gwynedd.gov.uk on the links page )

6 Bala to Lake Vyrnwy and return (34.5 miles) – from Bala to Bwlch y Groes (600m ascent!) to Lake Vyrnwy via Cwm Hirnant to Rhos y Gwaliau to Bala (contact for details).
