The list of Do's and Don'ts set out below will help to ensure that you cycle as safely as possible.
Do:
FOLLOW THE HIGHWAY CODE and ride with due care and attention.
CYCLE SAFELY - Remember country lanes can be narrow, so ride in single file and allow vehicles to pass. If unsure dismount your bicycle, especially at a junction where you may want to cross on foot.
THINK AHEAD - listen out for approaching traffic and show drivers what you plan to do. Remember that on narrow lanes vehicles can travel at speed so always look and signal in good time before you start, stop or turn. Ride positively and decisively.
BE AWARE - Ride clear of the kerb and look out for edges of tarmac that sometimes drop away sharply. Remember that on narrow lanes your sight lines are limited and that surfaces may be uneven.
CHECK THE CONDITIONS - get a weather forecast and make sure you have sufficient daylight to complete the journey. Just as in a car you should take greater care in wet or adverse weather conditions.
EQUIP YOURSELF. Make sure you are visible with reflective/ fluorescent clothing and wear a protective helmet. Carry sufficient food and drink.
EQUIP YOUR BIKE. Check your bike is in good condition especially the tyres and brakes and carry a puncture repair kit. Use reflectors and in case of poor daytime visibility or at dusk, front and rear lights.
ENJOY YOURSELF!
Don't:
USE A PERSONAL STEREO - This greatly limits your awareness of other road users and is dangerous.
CYCLE ON PUBLIC FOOTPATHS - This is deemed as trespass and is irresponsible behaviour. |
